Coyotes, should I worry?
Should I be concerned or how much should I be on the lookout for them? Sorry for all the questions but I like to be informed, especially concerning my critters!
Now the area of Ontario we live in now, has black bears and coyotes but I think around here they're more of a bush wolf and I've seen a few, they're not little!! And of course, the usual skunks, porcupines and foxes. I'm not too concerned going on the trails here, I always watch to see how Bayley is acting and if she seems to be getting spooky, we hightail it for the car!! She learned her lesson (hopefully) with one porcupine encounter, fortunately, she sniffs first. I think she thought it was some sort of weird kitty. She just got a few quills!!
Seems like all I hear is horror stories about coyotes.

Re: Coyotes, should I worry?
I think you should be OK if you're going to be out in Alsask. Coyotes usually only really get aggressive if they get into parks in the city where they are around people all the time (because they lose their fear). You'll hear about it in Calgary quite often because they will bite kids or dogs. If given the option, they really will choose to stay away from humans. I grew up in small-town Saskatchewan and our home backed the golf course. I think I only remember seeing one coyote. The ones here are pretty small so I wouldn't even worry too much about coming accross one. As for porcupines? Have your vet on speed dial . I think every dog in this province has at least one run-in with a porcupine or a skunk.

Thanks! There's a whole army base for us to wander around on, which is nice cause the roads are paved and the rest is open. Oh Miss Bayley learned not to sniff those funny looking kitties!! I'm glad she tends to be cautious about new things and not just grab! She only had a few quills on the end of her nose. She's a decent sized dog about 70 lbs but for the first while I think I'll keep her on her long line.
I noticed that the porcupines out in SK are a bit different looking than the ones here, looks like they have longer hair on their backs. I guess they need a bit more protection from the cold, although shouldn't be around much longer, should be time for them to go hibernate soon!
